HEALTHY BUSINESS – Five years in, Greene’s expand, excel, succeed!

Lorie Greene hasn’t forgotten where her personal training career
first started — in her basement, instructing friends, friends of
friends and neighbors who wanted to get in shape.
More than five years later, Greene is still helping people lose
weight. With the help of her husband Jeff and a group of seven
personal trainers and 20 fitness instructors, the Greene’s own and
operate GET FIT, which has some 350 members enrolled in a dozen
personal training and group workout classes.
The business has since left the basement, of course. They now
fill the historic, sprawling Samuel Walker’s building on the corner of
Mulberry and Main streets downtown, after a yearlong stint at 37
W. Main St. just a few doors down. “I’ve always been passionate about
fitness. It’s always been a part of my life,” Lorie said. “It all
started as a hobby, but after becoming certified myself, I realized
there was a need for this kind of service.”
In August, Jeff and Lorie celebrated their fifth anniversary
as a brick-and-mortar fitness center. They’ve renovated
the inside of the building to include two weight rooms, two
cardio rooms where group fitness classes meet and a
smoothie bar which sells protein and health drinks.
As the demand grew for their primary service, personal
training, the couple added group fitness training to accommodate
the growing numbers. Their ‘Ultimate Workout’ class
is among their most popular, Jeff said, because it combines
the targeted approach of individual training with a group
atmosphere.
“We’ve discovered there is a market for people looking for
accountability,” Jeff said. “People have been successful
here with a specific appointment time, a great workout and
nutritional guidance. They realize that personal training,
whether it be one-on-one or in a group setting is worth the
investment.”
In their short history, the Greene’s has been a story of
expansion and success where a handful of former tenants had
struggled to keep the doors open. Several restaurants, bars
and even a short-lived “lingerie club” have called the space
home, and Jeff said the building’s history of constant
turnover left some people skeptical about GET FIT’s
chances of succeeding.
“Everything in this building
before was bar, restaurant,” said Jeff, a retired Staff Lieutenant
with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. “It definitely had this bad air
on it for a couple of years. When we moved in, people
would drive by and say ‘How long are they going to last?’”
“People were hesitant to become members at first,”
Lorie added. “They’d say ‘I don’t want to get a membership
some place that won’t be open in a year. “Well, we’re still
here.”
In addition to their growing fitness center, the Greene’s
opened a second business in the summer of 2009 called The
Loft, which uses the building’s 5,000 square foot second story
for weddings, banquets and events.
Both businesses included, the Greene’s have only used
20,000 of the building’s 27,000 square foot, which Jeff said
leaves open the potential for future expansion.
“We’ve got a lot more room, so who knows,” he said.
Both Jeff and Lorie said they never expected five years
ago that they would be where they are today, operating two
successful businesses with room for more.
